About U&I Magazine

U&I Magazine is created by Taku, a creative designer based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. With a passion for design and photography, it was inevitable for Taku to combine the two to pursue what he likes doing best. While Smaku is his online alias, media Smaku is the company name that he designs under.

Hidden talent is found everywhere around the world. The hard part is getting it noticed. I have already been enlightened from several people's photography, their stories, and techniques that I am hoping others around the world will be too with this magazine.

With U&I Magazine, the content is created by people like you and I, and the magazine is designed by me. U&I accepts editorial and photo submissions from photographers from around the world - although only English articles are accepted at the moment.

Each issue of the magazine will have a general seasonal theme to the publication, with a potential for more specific article and photo themes. A portion of the magazine will also be dedicated to flickrVision.

Sometimes a question is so difficult it can only be answered by consensus. So when we set out to find today's top emerging photographers, we knew we'd better cast our net as wide as possible.

First we tapped dozens of photography professionals -- including photographers, curators, educators, editors, and agents -- to give us their suggestions. Then our staff scoured photographers' Websites and called in additional art. From an initial list of approximately 100 nominees, we chose 28 finalists, each of whom was asked to submit 15 images.

Those portfolios were considered by our five judges: Michelle Bogre, chair of the photography department at Parsons The New School for Design; Brian Paul Clamp, owner of the ClampArt gallery in New York; David Maloney, a top representative at the Art Department agency; Deborah Mauro, American Photo's art director; and noted commercial and editorial photographer Platon. From their selections came the 15 photographers featured in the following pages.

Throughout this process, we repeatedly encountered one obvious but difficult question: What makes a photographer "emerging"? We weren't satisfied to answer with the usual set of strictures about age or years on the job or number of books published. Instead, we wanted to make the classification more active, speaking to where a photographer was headed rather than what was already on his or her résumé. "Emerge," after all, is a verb, meaning "to come forth into view or knowledge." Accordingly, we looked for talented photographers who are poised to reshape the industry landscape. By highlighting them in the following portfolio, we hope to help them take the next step.

…Perhaps most telling are the photographers who address the dissolving distinctions between artistic "platforms" and genres. Alexandra Catiere's patinaed fashion work recalls 19th-century tintypes. Michael Christopher Brown's images of China's capitalistic metamorphosis come from a documentary tradition but read like paintings with their bright colors and skewed perspectives. The Sanchez brothers evoke a narrative outside their images by employing cinematic staging in their photographic tableau. And Amy Stein challenges the notion of immediacy by re-creating news stories of animal-human encounters.

Together, these 15 photographers serve as a weather vane for the industry -- pointing toward a future where images, through their pervasive impact and sheer versatility, are increasingly capable of addressing today's most difficult questions.

Draft was launched in Spring 2005 and was set up to publish high quality previously unpublished work by the most important practitioners working in the visual arts. Both established and fledgling.

Our aim is to publish a constantly original magazine, in which everything featured is genuinely an exclusive, one that works outside the prevailing systems of PR and syndication and relies on an editorial vision and direction.

We hope that over time Draft will become a recognised platform for personal work and an accepted record of contemporary concerns.

When you're in Amsterdam, one of the places not to be missed is its photography museum Foam. Foam also publishes a photography magazine, which I don't think is very widely known, even though it clearly deserves to be. Published four times a year, Foam (the magazine) is theme based - the current one being "Searching" — and presents portfolios of photographers who fit into that theme. "Searching", for example, contains work by Stephen Shore, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Thomas Ruff (on the web the images can't convey what they show in print), and others — with each portfolio printed on different paper (!) to maximize the impact of the work and accompanied by an essay about the photographer. "Searching" also contains an interview with gallerist Jen Bekman. Unfortunately, if you look for Foam at your newsstand or corporate book store, you probably won't have much luck. I managed to find it at some of the international magazine stores in New York City; but it appears to be best to simply place an order online.

I would like to inform you that the cover of our 22/2007 issue of "Kwartalnik Fotografia" received a distinction in the competition for te best press cover in Poland in 2007 - GRAND FRONT 2007. In the competition 375 covers took place.
On our cover we used a photograph taken by Diana Ducruet (Father and Daughter, 2003).
