IMHO CANON is losing market position
It's an impression based on cameras I acquired like the 1DMII, 5D, 50D
I suppose that camera tools are meant to get a pleasing photo ?
On that level the 1DMII was in 2004 a real revelation and putted Canon on top of the market leaders.
Of course, you can't compare a 1D series considered as pro to a semi-pro camera, although some of the features from the 1DMII used 4 years ago already now slowly leaks into the semi-pro cameras to keep up with the competition, that shows that Canon lost its leadership running after the competition.
While the 1DMII was top already in color-white balance, focus, grains, speed, we can notice only crippled new cameras in their line, from color-white balance not improved maybe degraded even, focus problems showing up, and now with the latest sensors not that improvement on grains as once it was really a revelation.
…Canon should do their homework a little better I believe, certainly on the tremendous growing demanding amateur market, I wish them success to take the lead again in the near future, taking steps forward on all levels ... increasing mega pixels is not enough anymore, increasing the quality of each pixel is.
After my first impressions of the 50D I consider to put the 5DMII on hold till mid 2009 in spite of the dust, maybe a revealing 1D will show up or even a better follow up of the 5DMII, taking the lead again.
Там — довольно живое обсуждение; вот большое замечание от Dr Frank'а:
Hello,
sorry, but from technical aspect, thats incompetent baloney. Do not compare apples and oranges!
Your statement just proves the contrary, i.e. that within those 4-6 years, Canon managed to raise the processing power of their pixel machines by a factor of >3. (8Mpix times 8,5fps with double processor vs. 22Mpix times 3.9 fps with single processor). The 50D and the 5DMKII are nearly as powerful as the 1D/1DsMKIII machines.
In the past years, Canon had a monopoly on many key technologies and in a few DSLR market segments, so they were able to give customers small improvement steps only, in parallel keeping prices high.
This situation has dramatically changed, as the big Sony company entered the DSLR market, and as Nikon obviously invested a lot in development and key technologies lately, after a time where they lost track more than a little bit.
Now those others companies are on par or even better than Canon in some technical aspects, and they are able to deliver a fierce competition with Canon - finally!!
So it is completely natural, that Canon is losing market shares, and prices are going down — good news for us!
…Knowing automotive development processes (Electronics + Mechanical + Software) very deeply, I'm impressed, how Canon manages its development and platform strategy, and is able to perform some bigger steps in a very short time of 1 year or so, if needed, and in strict accordance with market demands. (not necessarily customer demands)
I totally disagree, that the feature list of the 5DMKII is "disappointing", under the aspect of marketing strategy. They have no presents to give, like Nikon who had to catch up in my opinion.
Wait for the next technology cycles to come, and see, if Nikon is really that caritative institution as many people seem to believe. Will they really outplay Canon again, have they the necessary technological background? I wonder..
В репликах попалась и такая:
In Japanese market D700 has only about 1% market share in August. I guess canon has several versions of 5D2 and was watching D700's sale figure. If D700 was a hugh sucess they would've released a higher end 5D2 with more pro features. Instead they decided to criple some of the pro features and keep the cost down.
How much more do you think 5D2 will cost if canon throws in a pro AF, with two digic IV and maybe 6~7fps, plus shorter shutter lag.

If Nikon had a 5D Mark II, would you buy it?
With D700 at 3k and D3 at 5k (B&H prices), if Nikon released a 21.1 MP camera with hi def video and high ISO as good as, or perhaps slightly better than, the D3, and priced it at 2.7k would you buy it? Would you be jumping up and down in glory at Nikon's great achievement? Would you still buy a 5k D3 instead (why would you want lower res if the high ISO is not better)? Would you feel ripped off if you just bought a D3 or D700? Do you see where I am going with this question? Nikon is not going to come out with a 5D MII type camera now.
I know some of you will wail about how important fps is and claim that 12 MP doesn't clog hard drives so basically if your type of shooting loves high fps and 12 MP I'm not talking to you. But for other people who want their money's worth how can you not be impressed with the 5D Mark II, especially the price?
By the way this question assumes the new 5D is as good as early tests indicate.
